I think that the most important realization that I made today was hidden within scene one. In my head I believed that Margot accusing Maxine of creating\/sending the blackmail notes was NOT premeditated. I thought it was just a rash surge of anger coming from Margot. As she often does that, as is seen later on in the play. But today, Marc brought up that the likelihood of it being premeditated is something that I need to consider. I completely agree and it really changes the entire opening scene for me. I think that it is so interesting to come at it from this different angle. I am beyond excited to see Maxine, the woman that I love, but at the same time, I\u2019ve cut contact with her and feel guilty about that. The whole situation of Margot\u2019s mixed emotions is really eating at her and tearing her apart. And with this layer of the “blackmail notes\u201d being premeditated on top of it to ice the cake!? How MADDENING! <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Anyways, I am very happy that Marc pointed that out to me. It really helped me to better understand what was happening in the first scene. And nothing is concrete obviously. I do not think that my idea of perceiving this moment as rashness was misjudging Margot\u2019s thoughts and feelings. She of course does often act rashly and with little thought before she says certain things. However, I think it is interesting to explore these more calculated moments of hers. She is often calculated even if it’s not consistent and I think that\u2019s rather interesting to explore! <\/p>\n\n\n\n
I also have been finding more moments within the script where Margot can be ANGRY. I think that prior to our in person rehearsals I was so obsessed with how she hides herself. She is very calculated in how she presents herself to different people. Most of her identity and personhood is falsehood and I don\u2019t think she often lets herself be outwardly frustrated. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The idea of presenting or masking has been really important to me in bringing her off of the page. However, certain moments have come up in rehearsal where Margot has space and room to be genuinely angry, frustrated, and\/or annoyed. I think that because I want her to outwardly be very poised I have not left enough room for her internal frustrations to leave her body. I think there are certain moments where they definitely can. Finding those in rehearsal has been freeing and has helped me to understand her a lot better! One example that I found today was in the first scene when Maxine is talking about Margot\u2019s aunt. She says \u201cat least you got her money when she died\u201d and we have temporaily put in the script that I have to yell \u201cfuck off\u201d when she says that, so that I can understand the frustration that Margot is feeling.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
